David Davies MP has said the fall in the local unemployment rate is evidence that the economic recovery is “moving in the right direction”.
Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show the number of people aged 16-64 in the Monmouth constituency who were claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in September was 792, down by 272 compared to the same period in 2013.
Unemployment in Wales now stands at 6.5% of the adult population, while the UK’s unemployment rate has reached a six-year low of 6%.
“I am very pleased with these figures which seem to suggest that the economy is gradually recovering from the financial crash of 2008,” said Mr Davies.
“The fall in youth unemployment, which is faster in Wales than elsewhere in the UK, is particularly encouraging.
“Obviously, there is still a long way to go and we need to continue to reduce government borrowing. But there are positive signs that we are certainly moving in the right direction”.
