A large number of people gathered in Abergavenny on Thursday evening (17th July) to hear about plans for the National Eisteddfod, which will be held in the town in 2016.
While the event itself will take place in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire will be the official host and residents from across the county with an interest in Welsh culture are being encouraged to get involved.
The public meeting at Abergavenny Market Hall was opened with a display of traditional dancing from local schoolchildren, followed by introductions from representatives of the Eisteddfod and Monmouthshire County Council.
The organisers are looking for volunteers to help with arranging and judging the Eisteddfod’s various competitions.
The annual festival is the pinnacle of the Welsh cultural calendar but organisers were keen to stress that all are welcome regardless of their ability in the language.
Local MP David Davies, addressing the meeting in Welsh, welcomed the decision to bring the event to Monmouthshire.
“I try to attend the National Eisteddfod every year,” he said.
“It is a truly wonderful event which brings people together in a celebration of culture and language.
“Back in the 19th century, Lady Llanover helped to create the modern Eisteddfod so it is entirely appropriate that the festival has found its way back to Monmouthshire.”
