David Davies MP has signed a national charter in recognition of the rights and priorities of people living in Monmouthshire with motor neurone disease (MND) and their families.
Launched by the MND Association to raise awareness and understanding of the fatal disease, the five-point charter sets out the support those suffering from MND and their carers need to maximise their quality of life and dignity.
It has already received endorsements from leading medical institutions, including the Royal College of General Practitioners, Royal College of Nursing and Association of British Neurologists.
MND kills five people every day in the UK, with half of all sufferers dying within 14 months of diagnosis. There is no known cure.
Mr Davies said: “Few diseases are as devastating as MND.
“Unfortunately, the condition is still little understood and this contributes to many people not receiving the emotional and physical support they need.
“The MND Charter aims to change this and ensure people with MND and their families have access to timely and appropriate information, as well as care and services that allow them to maintain their quality of life and die with dignity.
“Several constituents have contacted me to highlight this important campaign and I’m delighted to sign up to the charter.”
