David has welcomed announcements in the Budget to support pubs across Monmouthshire.
David was a firm supporter of the Call Time on Duty Campaign and wrote on behalf of all pub landlords in the constituency to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, calling on him to abolish the Alcohol Duty Escalator and take other measures to help pubs.
The Budget announced:
1. Tax on beer to be cut by a penny a pint
2. Duties on Scotch whisky and other spirits will be frozen.
3. Duty on ordinary ciders to be frozen, helping cider makers hit by the recent weather.
4. Alcohol Duty Escalator scrapped.
David commented:
“I am a fan of the great British pub, which is one of Britain’s greatest institutions both historically and culturally. Throughout my time in Parliament I have done all I can to support pubs in Monmouthshire.
“It was made clear in a survey I recently conducted of all pubs in the constituency that the price of alcohol was a significant concern of pub landlords.”
“That was why I was delighted that the Chancellor listened to the concerns of many and abolished the Alcohol Duty Escalator, cut beer duty by 1p as he did in last year’s Budget and froze duty on cider and spirits. This budget is great news for pubs and people who work in them in Monmouthshire”.
